Foggy Mornings and Pretty Horses

Chloe in Fog 5x3 oil

To days little daily is one of my mare lounging about in her pasture in the early pre dawn morning. Living so close to the Cobequid Bay we are subject to a fair amount of fog in the morning and this morning was no exception.

The actual painting is not quite as blue as depicted here but the computer and I had some minor disagreements about how it should preform its duties. I figure it should work on brain waves by now and it generally believes that I am an inferior being which should be ignored! So before I gave in to the urge to take a hammer to it I figured retreat was the best option. My husband has a tendency to get a little cranky when I physically damage his "baby".

As a Sci Fi fan I am ever hopeful that the reality of technology will catch up to the television portrayal of computers aiding the human race in easy and non stressful manners! LOL

Lots of Colour

Brilliant Sunrise 5x3 oil
This is a painting of what I get to see from my front doorsteps on those rare gorgeous mornings when the heavens do not show restraint. The colour looks too brilliant to be true but trust me when I say it really was that vibrant. You will probably see more of this in the future as it lets me use some of those little used tubes of paint in my box.

Landscapes can be nice...

3 Trees 3x5 oil

Here's the deal, I hate painting landscapes. I won't even pretend that I enjoy it. I Love to see what a true landscape artist can do and admire their ability to create stunning pieces of art within that genre.

People ask me, can you paint my cow standing in a bed of fallen autumn leaves? Ummm,No.
Can you paint my horse in front of my house with all my beautiful flowers? Ummm, No.

I finally gave up a few years back and decided if they REALLY wanted their house, home farm, laundry , dog and kids included in the background of their painting I would acquiesce for a fee. It usually involved an additional 5 - 6 figure price tag and usually people very politely decided to leave me to what I do best. Minimal, non obstructive background fillers.

The aggravation to this portrait painter is that in my mind is a finished product. The job is for my eyes, fingers and grey matter to translate that mental image onto a canvas. Give me a horse, toad or cow and I can to it. For some reason ask me to paint a blade of grass, replicate a cloud or grow a tree my brain goes on vacation. Apparently if it isn't furry or covered in feathers my brain cells will not participate in the process what so ever.

For some reason unknown to me, occasionally I attempt to educate myself and try to convey a mental image in to an oily representation of what landscape is in my noggin. Todays painting is my attempt to make it a bit more fun and less stressful for my neurons. I actually like how it turned out.

Maybe it was that fact that I did not have a photo reference, or I did not sit out in the open tediously trying to capture every tidbit of bark and maybe it was the use of non tradition "earth" colours but on a whole I liked the outcome.

So maybe this was a bit like playing golf...now that I have had one good shot I'll keep trying landscapes with the belief that I can sink that hole in one!!

Blast from the Past

I'm Beautiful Damn It 5x7 oil portrait

I have been busy working on larger pieces and so I thought maybe a little glimpse of the past might be in order.

This fellow, or lady depending at your ability to sex toads, lived out side my garage and every time I worked in there last summer he/she would come in and visit me. I personally would like to think it was my charming personality that transcended the species gap but in reality I accept the fact that my lights might have been luring some late night summer feasts into my work area.

That confirms it, this must be a GUY toad as the best way to attract a man (human or otherwise!) is through his stomach!

Anyways, I finally grabbed my camera one night took some shots and this past winter painted the little fellow. I loved his arrogant attitude and I could not resist showing him off again.
I think Toads are beautiful. What is wrong with me??? LOL

Early Mornings are beautiful

Early Morning Splendor 8x10 oil sold

I love this time of year and I love the mornings. Everything is so beautiful and I never feel like I should have stayed in bed.

Today's painting is the last in the trio of pasture cows I was working on and I think I caught that fresh colour that an early morning light will give. If you look closely you will see the butterfly and if I am lucky I will find a real one today. Anything beats the visits I get from those wretched June Bugs. Yuck.

I think that has got to be one of the most disgusting creepy critters God ever created. They have the steering ability of a 2 year old on a trike, hit you like a homerun baseball and stick like gum to our favorite dress shoes. Even ducks don't like to eat them! Something is wrong when a duck does not find you appetizing! I am quite sure that in the grand scheme of things the fates did not create June bugs JUST to annoy me. ;)

June 24th

Sometimes you get to do nice things for others and sometimes you get to do nice things in conjunction with others.

Last weekend was the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centers Charity Auction where I had a trio paintings up for grabs. The deal was the highest bidder was able to chose the painting of their choice. The bidding was fierce and in the end the Peregrine Falcon went home with someone new. The other bidder was interested in The Boreal Owl. So I decided to be brave and contact the other bidder and tell her if she wanted the painting I would donate 100% of the proceeds to the CWRC. Turns out she loved the idea.

I guess great minds think alike!

June 23rd

It is very interesting for me to look at these photos of the progress on the Prowly Cougar. Although there has been a great deal of work put into this most recent stage of the painting it is hard to tell when comparing it to the last entry. Hopefully you can now see a definite form and structure on this cat as well as feel a presence from him.

It is also interesting to me that I never noticed the white "stick" I had attached to his front leg until I posted it today. You can sit in front of a painting all day long and fall in love with the way the paint lays on the canvas to the point where you become blind to glaringly obvious faults. I guess it is kinda like falling in love... you don't see the faults!

There are a few here I will be fixing!!

I am looking forward to the application of fur and detail work. I am very pleased with the look of this piece as a whole and getting excited about the finishing touches.

June 22nd - Something olde becomes new again

Olde English Dorset 4x5 oil

Last night I had the pleasure of showing the local 4H Light Horse Club the joy of side saddle riding. It had been 2 years since I had ridden Chloe in the side and so Saturday and Sunday I re introduced her and myself to the intricacies of this "Gentle" way of riding. Chloe handled it like the super trooper that she is while I flopped about on her back like a landed trout on a rocky shore. Not a pretty sight to say the least.

The group arrived at the pre determined time and I went through the whole spiel about what makes a good side saddle horse and showed them the basics of riding side as compared to astride. I had expected resistance and maybe even some mockery but I was pleasantly surprised by everyone. They had an open mind and were all eager and willing to learn. Even when I announced that it was time for them to try riding. A slight trepidation was seen in the beginning but this was quickly erased by eager accepting minds. Even the leader rode around on Chloe.

My daughter wanted to ride as well and insisted she show her "advanced" abilities at the trot. Remember, I am as stiff as fence post from my previous 2 days of riding prep and Anna , whom I love dearly, has never trotted in the side saddle. So being the protective parent that I am I jog along side Chloe , who thank the lord lives to western jog with beginners, while I try to teach, talk and jog at the same time. Multi tasking while using physical acivity and coherent language abilities is not a simple as it sounds.

Folks, I spend the majority of my day in the studio. The only time I move faster than a walk is if a house is on fire, and now when my diva of a daughter wants to show off in front of the rest of the horse club. I survived and sent a multitude of "Thank you lords" upwards to the heavens and then prayed that the same good Lord would drop a boulder on me when another young member of the club decided he would not be out done by Anna.

Dueling riders and only me to lead them on their quest to victory. What was I thinking????I believe the fates are evil.

Long story short, I survived and I am taking enough Tylenol to boost shareholders profits for the next quarter! All joking aside (get it??) I really enjoyed myself and working with this small group of open minded folks. Even if they never pursue riding side I hope they brought away an appreciation for an old almost forgotten way of riding.

So what does this have to do with art? After my rather long segway, it has a lot to do with it. I am lucky enough to have a Veterinarian book that my Great Great Grandfather owned and in it shows a plethora of etchings of almost every type of agricultural animal. The thing I love about this book is that the renderings are artistic and completely inaccurate from a conformational perspective. I am a huge fan of this style of work which I call Olde English because that is the time frame I think of when I see it. No doubt someone will correct me and let me know the proper phrase but the point is I like this style of art.

To days daily is based on an etching in this book. I appreciate the artists attempt to render this Dorset ewe for future generations to enjoy. Being a portrait artist who deals almost exclusively in animal work I know the difficulty in capturing the essence of the animal and as a younger artist I dismissed this style as "wrong" because of its imperfections. Detailed folks are like that. Now I see the beauty in it and now I want to re create this style. My mind is playing around with the idea of incorporating that style with to days subjects and much like the 4H'ers last night wondering how to take something useful from something olde and applying it to my present infatuation.

SO needless to say, you will in the future see more of this idea represented in my art. I am already scheming how to paint my buddy Chloe in this "Olde" style. I only wish I could grow more arms and clone myself I have so many ideas bubbling up. What do you think? Does the world need more mes?? LOL

Peregrine Falcon 5x7 oil SOLD

This weekend the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Center had its charity auction to raise funds for their center. One of the big things they are trying to gather funds for is a new flight pen where raptors and other species of birds can learn to fly and gain strength in their wings without fear of attack. A very worth while cause. You can check out their website at www.cwrc.net

I donated three paintings of which the highest bidder gets to chose their favorite. The highest bidder this year was also last years winner and she really likes the small sized paintings. I was able to talk to her last year and she said she thought the idea of making them collectible was great. They also make fine unique gifts without breaking the bank. I have to agree! The painting above is her selection from the trio. It is an actual portrait of one of the falcons that Dr. Van Donnick and her team have saved.

June 19th- Lets do it again!!

You know what I love about June 19th 2010? I get to celebrate it twice!

Thanks to a not too subtle reminder from my sister in law who questions my maritime ability to time travel I realized that I entered in the wrong date. Opps.

Yes I am living in my own little world, don't worry, they know me there!

So I figured since yesterday was so fantabulous, I would repeat the same event ...only better!

To days painting is the next step up in my Truro Home stretch piece and now I hope you can see the extreme light the evening sun was casting on these magnificent animals as they turn the corner to head into the homestretch. Now comes the hard part, the racehorses.

I figure if I muck it up I will just skip that day, hey, it worked before! ;)

Have a great day and have a laugh at yourself because we all know that laughing is contagious.

June 19th - What a Beautiful Day

The thing I love about sunny days is that I get very inspired and start new paintings. This new one is probably my most ambitious in a very long time. I usually focus on single subjects with simple backgrounds and minimal tack. I like the simplistic view. This new one is anything but simple. The photo that it is based on was taken during Grand Circuit week at the Truro Raceway last year. It was a fantastic day with incredible light and fast horses. Any artists dream!

I plan to show this painting in various stages to see how an artist gets from point a to point z with a few foreign languages added in for good measure!

The thing I love about grey rainy days, I get right to work and plug away at my favorite thing...details. Considering how many rainy days were have here in Nova Scotia it is no surprise why I love this nit picky part of painting!

Enjoy your day whatever the inspiration!

June 16th - Burnt Offerings

Again today, the Prowly Cougar in yet another layer of creation! Some of you might think I have gone a step backwards but painting in oils is very similar to sculpting, only in oils you add layers as opposed to removing them.

Unless you've made a real muck up of things... like I do on a regular basis. Case in point, I decided to bake chocolate chip cookies, and I was doing fine and on my third batch when I thought to myself "Almost done." Unfortunately almost done to my subconscious means "leave the house and start planting tress and shrubs in the garden". 45 minutes later I sashay back into my smoke filled home to be greeted by my belching oven spewing cookies that wouldn't even have as much taste as a charcole brikett!

To make matters worse, my daughter decided to take several to school for show and tell and as it happens today is "family picnic" day. All of the staff, students and parents giggled, commiserated or out right laughed at Annas' black morsel. Those of a suspicious nature assumed, incorrectly, that this is a regular occurrence to my daughters lunch bag and of course Anna didn't tell them otherwise. 8D

On the bright side...none of said parents will be dumping their kids at my house for supper anytime soon!!!

So how does this relate to painting? Well, the more layers and the more attention one pays to their art the better it turns out! As long as I don't go anywhere near the oven, this may just turn out to be a great piece!!!!!!!!

Already you can see the formation of the eyes and the facial features of the cat. After the whole body gets a similar treatment then comes the application of the colour/coat which is the FUN stuf.

Cheerio!!

June 15th

Prowly Cougar

The studio has been a busy place lately. I finished 2 paintings yesterday and an very pleased with the results. My Prowly Cougar is on the easel again and I thought I would show you the results thus far. I really like how the colours have blocked in so well and you can really feel the cougars presence. It feels like that canvas does not have the ability to restrain him. Pretty cool.

Whats really cool is all my toes are now free and clear of that infernal no stick inanimate objects together glue! I should sell it to the nearest hospital as a new stitch replacement device. The trials and tribulations of a do it yourselfer!

Have a great day!

June 14th- Why be normal?

You lead, I'll Follow Oil 10x8

Today I have for you one of those "larger pieces" for your viewing pleasure. Before David and I moved into our new place we rented from a dairy farmer whose dry cows and heifers were pastured behind our house.

It continually amazed me that the cattle would choose to stay in the pasture as scenes like this were repeated daily. You can tell that given even the slightest bit of encouragement the fence would be in pieces and the the only view of the cows we would get would be that of their rears hightailing it elsewhere! I guess the grass really is greener on their side of the fence!

While photogreaphing this painting I pulled on a pair of sandles fresh from the basement and winced as I heard a "twack twack" as the soles slapped the bottoms of my shoe. I decided to repair my shoes since they are favorites so salvation must be tried. I read the label of the can of adhesive spray, sprayed from required distance in nice even strokes and waited the 15 seconds to join the two sides together.

They would not stick.

I sprayed more.

Still no stick, so I squeezed, pressed and pushed and then a ray of inspiration hit me. They are shoes, put them on and use my body weight to ensure a good seal. Smart huh?

They sealed alright...TO MY FOOT!

I tried to wash the glue off. I used cleansers that would sterilize an operating room and still my big toe sticks to my next . UGHH! I tried the , "Lets dab it a million times to reduce the stick approach" now I have huge wads of kleenex attached to my toes. Great looking sight!

A half an hour later I remove the couch from the sandle and guess what? My toes are picking up all sorts of household debris and my sandles still don't stick to the sole of shoe!!!!

It is time to return to the studio where I have some semblance of control!!

Have a great day.

June 13th Happy Anniversary!

No Daily today. I am focused on larger pieces and also enjoying the fine weather and beauty of the day.

Each day I try to walk. It clears my mind and helps loosen stiff joints better than any medication can. Today's picture is a photo I hope to someday use as a subject for a future painting.

Here in Nova Scotia we are fortunate enough to have a wide diversity of life surrounding us. In the forests where I walk I have been watching the progress of the Lady Slippers and the morning after a torrential downpour I am sure was equal to that which launched Noah Ark, the sun arrived. It danced and glittered its way though the rain drenched blossoms and I was glad to have my camera along. Even if my sneakers were soaked through and through!

This is also my way of sending a bouquet to my husband, with whom I am celebrating 18 glorious years together! I am looking forward to 18 more!

Lots of Beauty In Nova Scotia!

Prowly Cougar

What a great day today is! The temperature is reaching summer bliss and the sun is shining at full capacity heating my solar panels up, saving the environment AND my wallet!

The post today is the beginning of something wonderful. I had the good fortune to go to the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park as a chaperone for my daughters class trip. While there I mostly chased along behind the kids because I was too busy photographing the animals there! This new painting is based on the Cougar that is a resident at the park. If you ever have the chance to go to the park and see first hand some of the wonderful exhibits there you would not regret it. There will be many more paintings based on this great trip as I am particularly interested in some really great photos of Red Tailed hawks, Eagles, Big Horned Sheep, Wolves and swans. The list goes on and on but I figure you get the idea!

Just for your viewing pleasure is my Favorite picture of one of the many Peacocks at the park. I am not sure if I will ever attempt to r e create him on canvas but I must admit he made an admirerer out of me!

Muckross House Kerry Cattle, Ireland 4x4 Oil

A few years back I had the good fortune to visit Ireland. We stayed in Cork and I took several bus tours to visit the Emerald Isle. For those of you who have never had the pleasure to vacation here I can tell you it is well worth the trip. Plus, all those stories about there being a million different colours of green are in reality Underestimated! As an artist, trying to take in the multiple hues of green can numb your mind and unless you were actually there someone would see your interpretation of an Irish landscape and accuse you of using too much artistic license!

Todays little gem is based on a photo from Muckross House in the famous Killarney National Park. It is a historic home where royalty would stay and grazing upon the grounds are the Irish Kerry Cattle. They are so black it defys description and with the multitude of greens behind them as a backdrop the whole scene was absolutely stunning!

Have a great day!

My Mothers Sugar Bowl 4x4 Oil

You know how as a kid your parents job is to annoy and embarrass you? It is not until you grow up and hopefully mature that you realize that such moments are only humorous bumps in this eventful journey we call life.

My mother was one such individual. She was a gifted seamstress who loved to create her own clothing. There was nothing in her closets that was not altered in some fashion to express that creative force within her. I remember fondly ( much less so at the time) my Mother arriving at my elementary school to pick me up for some childhood appointment. My mother had little use for authority figures and since Principals ranked even lower than that she promptly sailed past the office in search of her offspring. While I, the obedient child, sat in class listening to the teacher drone on about some useless tidbit of information only future rocket scientists would adore and waited for that interruption from the Principals office ordering me to come down to the center of the schools universe and meet my mother.

By now my mother was breezing through the school stopping by each and every class room , her gray velvet fur lined cape billowing in the wake of her quick movements as she surveyed each child to find her own.

Not even deigning to acknowledge the presence of the teacher she quickly swirled from each room leaving only stray bits of Mink hair floating about.

Then came the calling out of my name. Not the Crystal that all my friends used but my full name. First , Middle and last which of course as any child knows ( regardless of age) that when that full name is used the speaker is now approaching some sort of extreme irritation.

Being in 5th grade and a rather meek and mild child, (I mean who can compete when your mom designs her own clothes??) I rapidly calculated the pros and cons of hiding under my desk and hoping for the compassion of my fellow classmates to play along with my I don't exist here fantasy. A brief pause in the theory of physics and it s ability to render space travel was the first clue that MOM was near, that and the murmurings of Elizabeth? from fellow students who giggled at my old fashioned middle name. Realizing salvation would not come from the human life forms inhabiting the room I resigned myself to gathering up my school books and was beginning to rise from my Oh so comfortable school desk when my mother roared in, her floor length cape whisking the garbage can across the room to rattle at a stop by my teachers feet while my mom ignored his very presence. It was a bit of a wake up call for one so used to being "worshiped" as an educator of young minds. (Insert heavy sarcasm here)

I was subjected to a rather quick verbal reminder of my short comings and reminded to hurry as mother, never stopping her movement swirled around, sashayed out the door leaving a pile of papers fluttering from desks to the ground. I Apologized profusely to everyone, muttered some sort of apology to the teacher although it was more for my mothers interruption and not so much for disturbing his brain numbing teaching style. Clutching my books to my chest while starring at the floor I tried not to walk on my class mates drawing of cars etc...it seems I was not unique in my boredom in that room, and raced after mom!

Mom was easy to find, her cape neatly cleaned the school hallways of all sorts of debris.

Mom has been gone three years now and I remember once embarrassing moments with fondness. I also cherish many of the mementos that she has gifted upon me and the reasons for them. My mom wanted me to be an interior designer, not the animal technician I spent that last two decades of my life mired in. She bought me a silver serving set in hopes that I would serve tea in a lady like manner. Something I told her was unlikely as I usually drank from a hose when thirsty, wore jeans and T shirts that normally required toxic chemicals to keep clean from the various amounts of animal feces and ...well you get the picture.

Where she would design her outfits I would grab off the rack at Zellers without a second thought. As young people we really do deserve a smack or two upside the head! Anything my mother wanted I did the exact opposite.

It took years but as the cycle of life dictates , I too was gifted with my own children and now I find myself much more mellow. A fact that those who have not known me a long time would no doubt refute but life long friends will admit there is a softness there that wasn't there in my younger years.

It is that softness that had me polishing moms (I will never call it it mine!) silver sugar bowl and after a several years of storage and neglect it did clean up remarkably well. It is this little bowl that I used not as a serving utensil but as the subject of my daily painting.

I hope you like it.

May you remember your past with fondness as well.

Glass Insulator II 4x4 oil
What a gorgeous day we have. The sun is shining brightly and my solar powered ambition chip has me itching to get up to the studio and paint. Yesterday was super productive as I worked on two pieces and made smashing progress. Some time soon you'll have a Red and White Holstein and a Prowly Cougar to view!

I must admit the dailies are doing exactly what I had hoped and helping me loosen up my technique. I am choosing subjects I normally avoid (reflective glass, still life etc) and limiting myself to finishing them in one day. This seems to kill any normal propensity to labor on, pick apart and stress out about tendencies that I hate. Forcing myself to try something outside of my comfort zone in theory should help me grow as an artist. Yeah right! Wouldn't Freud have a field day with that statement!

I look forward to posting the results in the future and seeing what folks think. ...Maybe!

The Glass Insulator 4x4 oil
Today's post is based on a collection of glass insulators I inherited from my mother. I love the way the light bounces through them, off them and around them. I am sure you will see more in the coming days as I love the challenge of capturing their translucent colours.

June 4th

I have been a huge admirer of the daily painters website. Actually more like addicted as I faithfully check each day to see what marvels that group of artists has created.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the daily painters idea it is as its title suggest. Artists create one new piece of art work each and every day. It is a fantastic display of creativity at its most unrestrained and I love it. Not that I aspire to create a work a day but the plan is to create what I call dailies. Small pieces that are created in one day because for those of you who know me, well, I like to fuss over my work, chasing details to distraction. So this exercise I hope will loosen up my creativity and get rid of that muse killing tendency to be a control freak!!

The first one is called Little Bird and is a 4x4 still life of a present from my kids.

June 3rd

Good morning all!

Today I have a "MOO"ster piece, something my cattle friends have been desiring for a while! This is a mature cow just standing in the field probably wondering if I am going to chase her in for her evening milking!

This is one of a series of paintings featuring the bovine beauty in pasture. It is a bit of a deviation from my usual fare whereby this lady is standing in the three quarter pose as opposed to the regular side profile stance. I think she looks like she has more character here and is a bit more natural in her demeanor.

The three quarter is a bit more difficult as you can easily distort her image if your not careful. I think she turned out quite well.

Dunachton Gale- oil

This evening is the opening for the Town of Truros Art Acquisition Art Show held at the McCarthy Gallery here in town. It is an annual event where the town encourages artists to submit paintings that are representative of the lifestyle and historic development of the town of Truro.

This year I have entered two paintings both based on the harness racing aspect of our community. Horses are a passion of mine and they frequently end up as subject matter for my work. We are lucky enough to have our own racetrack here (Truro Raceway ) and followers of the harness industry will recognize the name SomeBeach SomeWhere, the World Champion who hails from here.

The entry of Dunachton Gale, who was quite re known in the area prior to Beaches arrival is one such painting .

The second painting is based on a series of photos I took one day at the track. There were so many vibrant active characters that I presently have 5 canvas' on the go depicting them! I found the interaction between man and horse to be captivating as well as complex. Having owned a Standardbred ex- racehorse in my youth I know from first hand experience how hard wired the desire to win is built into these competitors. Watching many of them struggle with the restraints of man trying to out run the wind thrilled me to watch, and brought back a few memories of youthful back road racing with my friends!

Training day at Truro (oil) is the one I chose for the competition.

It will be interesting to see how it all works out!

The First Day

A friend of mine encouraged me to start this "blogging". With the cajoling comments of "If I can do it anyone can", I decided to take the plunge. Whether or not anyone will be interested in what I am doing is a fact that will only be proven with time, but my hope is to display my art work and tell the stories that accompany each one.

I am an artist who paints only in oils and primarily only portraiture. My subjects are usually animals of one species or another and each one has its own unique reason for being.

I am lucky enough to travel, have a great camera that captures inspiration and the courage to push paint across the canvas to hopefully create an essence that will capture your attention.

So here's to all my friends and family who can now rest easily knowing their email boxes will not be filled to the brim with creations cluttering my studio.

My first post here is focusing on an upcoming event that I support. The Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is a rescue organization that is dedicated to helping injured and disabled wildlife. Their web address is www.cwrc.net. They are raising money to help build an eagle flight pen and I have donated a painting to their Auction coming up June 19th.

The birds I have painted are all animals that Dr. Van Doninck and her crew have saved and were "cover models" in their calendar. I have created three portraits and they are displayed at the auction and the winning bidder gets their choice of portrait. They are small size paintings (4x6 and 5x7) and lasts years winner was so pleased that she encouraged me to repeat the process. She, like many others liked the smaller size, found it less intimidating and it made a really unique affordable gift for her daughter!

There is currently a bid of $40 from Alberta for the Peregrine Falcon so folks, let the games begin!
